See an interview by Delicate Genius of Heather, Iain Macdonald and Gregory Brine into the birth of the Velicoroflcoptersaurus urban legend.

Everyone knows @likeomg and me created a new species for Amnesia Razorfish in the Velociroflcoptersaurus recently. That ballooned into a social media competition spanning across Twitter and the search engines and is somewhat of an urban legend now.

At the last count, there was around 7,500 results in Google and 15,600 in Live Search. That’s pretty impressive for word we made up!

So, @delicategenius interviewed @likeomg, @eunmac and @gregory_brine to find out more about how and why it came into existence. You can watch it over at the Delicate Genius Blog: DG TV: VELOCIROFLCOPTERSAURUS. Enjoy.

I’m at that point where my blogging has calmed right down. I used to write several blogs a week, either for work or for myself.

But of late, I’ve been struggling to get the inspiration and I’m not sure why. To defend myself on how slack I’ve been, I love writing, as you can probably tell by the way I’m waffling now. I always have enjoyed writing, and I also love helping people review things they’ve written to help them target their audience better. Be it for a client, internal procedures, technical explanations or even personal documents like CVs.

That’s just the way I am, and I enjoy it. So what happened?

I’m using Twitter a lot, and talking to people getting links, re-tweeting and sharing dialogues with people. Maybe that’s the problem. I also still have my large number of feeds attaches to my Newsgator account - I check that on my work machine, home machine and my iPhone. Maybe I have too many feeds and am overloading myself and can’t focus on things.

At Amnesia Razorfish, I’m a project manager, but have involved myself in a lot of other projects. This has seen me moving away from my technical role, where I was quite a pioneer in researching and documenting things for the various companines I work for.

In my personal life, I’ve not been travelling much of late, and I like to keep my more personal adventures to my close friends on Facebook - I’m sure a lot of people understand where I’m coming from with that.

So what’s happened? What’s gone wrong? Maybe I just don’t have time anymore. My trip to work is now a walk, so I’m missing out on that hour of travelling a day that used to let me watch numerous podcasts.

I just don’t know, and I feel like a part of me has gone.

But then on re-reading this blog, maybe I just need to start writing again… Just sit down with a computer, see what happened on the day and write. Maybe that’s what a good personal blog is all about.

So I’ve been on detox for a week now, and lot of people doubted I’d make it even this far, let alone finish. Why? Because I’m known for my going out antics, love of a good beer and a good cup of coffee.

What makes it worse is that the detox I’m on is quite strict, possibly overly strict: No meat, egg white wheat products, oranges (wrong PH), you get the idea. I can have fish every so often though. Mix that in with the variety of herbal pills you take with it - yes, the effects are true - and you get an interesting diet.

But I’ve made it, and I’m feeling better for it, I think. That might just be the removal of beer and coffee, but I’m sleeping better and I do feel a little better than I did - not that I ever felt bad.

So what do I miss? Well, I really do miss my morning cup of coffee, but I think after this, I’ll limit myself to just that morning coffee. And obviously beer, but again, that will be down to once or twice a week. And meat and eggs. That’s been the toughest as you can imagine, especially when you make scrambled eggs as good as mine!

The one downside is going to the pub with your friends and watching them getting drunk is no fun… hmm… Beer. Not helped when friends go “I admire your will power. Want a beer?” Thanks for that Dave. So cruel.

I will make it though. Only another week to go… No problem!

Transfering my site across, and moving the domain proved a little problematic due to my domain being near to expiry, and some communication trouble with the old hosts.

Their patience was exemplary, and now my site’s up and running faster than ever.

Have you heard of this legend? Very few have seen it, but apparently it appears only during fits of uncontrollable laughter.

It was first reported in the Amnesia Razorfish offices in Sydney, but word has it that it has started to migrate through channels such as Twitter and Google.

We will be do further studies into this mythical beast, and hope to be able to obtain sketches of it’s appearance over the Christmas period when heavy bouts of laughter are expected to draw it into the limelight.

Update: One has been seen in the wild, thanks to Iain Mcdonald for capturing this historic moment. Here it is: Velociroflcoptersaurus

We all know and love round the clock on the pool table. It’s simple, fun, and challenging at times. But, today, whilst in the pub, we decided to add a drinking twist to it. And I thought I’d share our idea with you. Feel free to comment and let me know of any changes you’d make.

So here goes… The usual rules for round the clock is pot the balls in order, striking the balls in order. Our drinking variation is this:

Miss the ball your meant to hit, 1 finger of beer

Foul - e.g. sink the wrong ball or the white - drink two fingers

Pot the ball you’re going for, everyone else drinks a finger

Do something stupid - this is discretionary one, but you’ll work out how to use it - drink one or two fingers

And that’s it. Simple eh? And it does the trick. One word of warning though, you’ll be refilling your glasses frequently! It was a tough afternoon in the bar.

For the record, we were trying out our new local, the Bat And Ball in Redfern.

Yesterday - Saturday 27th October - must have been one of the most perfect spring days in Sydney since I’ve been here. It was around 30degrees, clear sky and a very light wind to keep it pretty much perfect.

It was Dave’s stag do, so we figured a day at the races followed by dinner at Churrasco’s in Coogee was of the order.

Everyone was dressed up to the nine’s, and it was really nice to see everyone looking so smart. Was really classy till later in the day when everyone was drunk and mildly sunburnt. A few of us were still feeling the previous night’s effects on our body, but thankfully, that age old tradition of hair of the dog seemed to do the trick.

As for the racing, well… Lets just say that there’s a few bookmakers that are better off than me now. The horses just didn’t seem to be in my favour. I had several place wins, but as everyone knows, they very rarely pay the bills.

But it was great fun, if a little costly. Such a great atmosphere, and if you’re here for the Randwick Spring Carnival, it’s highly recommended as a fun day - apart from trying to get a cab afterwards.

So from there, we headed down to Coogee - via Steve’s for a top up - to eat at Churrasco in Coogee. It’s a Brazilian style BBQ where you pay a set amount - $35 - and they keep topping up your plate.

They wander round with a selection of Pork, Steak (beef), chicken, lamb and pineapple (surprisingly good when barbecued!). Naturally, the rice and potatoes are ignored as the meat is so tender and well cooked that it seems to just melt in your mouth. I made it through 14 or 15 servings. Steve somehow managed 20. Good effort!

The atmosphere was great, with everyone sitting around wooden benches, and chatting. In true Brazilian style, everyone was very friendly, including the staff (most of them). Good food, great wine, great atmosphere. I’d definitely say give it a try. It’s a 7 out of 10.

My bike has been sitting there, pinning for me to take him out to stretch his wheels. So yesterday I did, going out as usual, but something I’d read recently made me keep my eyes on the roads a little more.

The headwind was a killer! Every direction I went, it seemed to be in my face. And Sydney’s not a very flat place, so those hills suddenly seemed a lot worse!

The Sydney Morning Herald recently ran an article, Sydney needs to wake up to the benefits of pedal power.

In it, Sydney is compared to European cities and how the help and encourage cycling. While I was out I started noticing things like the drain covers running in the same direction as you’re cycling, making them into something akin to a cattle grid for bikes - something some car drivers would love I dare say. The potholes were still there, but seem to have gotten bigger. And suddenly I was so much more conscious of how I was having to swerve from the safety of the gutter into the traffic to avoid falling over. It was very disconcerting!

But then, the areas where there were cycle lanes, the cars were very good and stayed clear and didn’t pull across in front of you - or look like their indecision might see you eating metal and tarmac.

And then a curious thing that I’ve always wondered about in London is the coloured areas - the green area of road with a cycle symbol on. I only passed one, but I could visible see the cars a lot more aware of me. It was weird. Almost like I suddenly had a beacon on my head and was 20 times more visible.

I’m hoping given the number of bikes now sold, the number of people now cycling and the cost of petrol that they’ll fix the potholed and turn the grating covers. Paint some more cycle lanes and add in those magic green areas. Read that article, especially if you work for the transport department in Sydney! Please!

You spend so long work, with your friends, and reading everyone else’s Blog that it’s hard to find the time to indulge in life’s little pleasure of writing for fun for yourself.

I’m a project manager at the moment, and that sees my day filled up with organising people, writing technical documents and ensuring that projects make money.

Tech writing is fun and challenging, coming up with solutions and describing them in a way everyone else on the project will both understand and find useful, whilst still solving the problem. But, it’s for work, and good as it is to get positive feedback, it’s just not yours…

I mean it is yours as far as you researched it, you decided what it should do and you wrote it. But, most of the time, it didn’t come from something you read or did that inspired you. If it did, that’s a good feeling, but a lot of the time it doesn’t given the satisfaction of just writing because you want to.

Now Blogs are a different story. They’re usually based on something that really pipped your interest. Perhaps something you read, or an encounter that got you thinking. Perhaps something on telly or in the news. You know it when it hits you, and you know you have to write it.

Next question. When do you do it? That’s the real trick. My best time seems to be sitting in front of the telly in the evening. That sounds odd, but it gives me the time to just drift dreamily in and out of what I write.

It’s strange, but the background noise and distraction seems to help me focus. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s the comfort and familiarity of the surroundings. Maybe the telly gives off some kind of weird aura. I don’t know.

But I know I enjoy it when and I do it, and I really need to do it more. Both at home and at work. With the internet as my inspiration, I don’t really have an excuse not to, do I!
