Ok, so I’m probably going to make myself slightly unpopular by questioning what the point of the iPod video is. Don’t get me wrong, I love Apple stuff. Hell, I’m writing this on my trusty Apple G4 Quicksilver (yes, it’s still hanging on), and I own 3 iPods (admittedly I only use the Nano and the shuffle as the 30GB one is a tad broken). But, I just can’t get to grips with what the point of the video on an iPod is.
The thing is, despite the redesign – which I thought looked odd at first, but is growing on me – that screen is just TOO small to be any good for watching anything on! Compare it to one of the the media players, such as the Creative Zen. They have a bigger screen, but in my opinion, even that’s not big enough. Start looking at the PSP, and the screen gets to something you can look at. It’s still not massive, but it’s getting there.
Ultimately I think it’s just me, but unless I start doing a lot of long haul flights, it’s fairly pointless. And I doubt the battery would last a transatlantic flight whilst playing video.
Perhaps I’m being a miserable so and so. To be honest, I love the iPod! I was at the UK Mac Expo when it was unveiled. I ran home and ordered one and I’ve never regretted it (except when the original one got stolen).
At it’s heart, it’s a music player, and at that it does the best job of anything out there! The sound quality is fantastic. The menu system is unbeatable. It’s created a whole community on the Internet. And it looks superb!
Maybe I’ll come round to the video thing in the future, but for now, I’m going to stick to listening to my music in superb quality (on my recently acquired Nano – which is the best gizmo ever!).
