Our planned early start on the road to Cairns was slightly delayed by our hangovers and lack of sleep. Eventually, with the help of a Subway sandwich , we commenced the 7hr drive up the coast.

Thankfully, the scenery was a lot more varied, and we tried to figure out what all the ’shantity’ town type communities actually did to get by. We reckon they probably work in the seemingly never ending sugar can plantations.

As we got near to Cairns, the landscape changed into mountains covered in thick rainforest foliages.

Beautiful sunsetArriving in Cairns, in the dying sunlight, you realise that it is no longer the charming town it was once was, but is reminiscent of the gross over developed places on the Mediterranean.

We found our 5* hotel just as it started raining very hard! The hotel had upgraded our room to a 2 bedroom apartment – these last few days were going to be spent in real luxury!

That evening, we decided to have a quiet meal and drinks as the last few days had been quite tough.
